Who We Are And What We Do

• The El Dorado County Indian Council, Inc. is a non-profit organization created in 1975 to advance the economic, educational, cultural, legal, and social status of Native Americans residing in El Dorado County, California. 

• The El Dorado County Indian Council, Inc. engages in fund raising activities throughout the year, and gives a portion of those funds to scholarships for students of Native American descent who are actively pursuing educational and skill-based activities beyond high school. 
  
  
  
• The El Dorado County Indian Council, Inc. also supports community enrichment activites devoted to furthering understanding and cooperation between Native and non-Native people and organizations in El Dorado County.

The history of Native Americans in what is now El Dorado County is extensive, and goes well back into the prehistory of California.  Prehistoric inhabitants of this area of the California foothills were Southern Maidu, or Nisenan.  The majority of Native people who live here today are Miwok by affiliation. 

The current Native American population of El Dorado County is multi-tribal, and the make-up of The Eldorado County Indian Council, Inc. reflects the multi-tribal nature of the population. 

Our members have tribal affiliations throughout North America, and  we welcome Native and non-Native Americans, regardless of their affiliations, to join with us in working toward a better future for all people who live in El Dorado County.
